SS JOHN W. BROWN VISITS

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Pier 36, 299 South Street, New York, NY 10002

SEPTEMBER 9 - 19

The SS JOHN W. BROWN is steaming up to New York to celebrate her close connection with this fantastic city. In 1946 when many Liberty Ships were being scrapped or sold the SS JOHN W. BROWN was loaned by the Maritime Commission to the New York City Board of Education for use as a floating vocational high school teaching the maritime trades. It would fill the role as the only floating nautical high school in the US for 35 years, moored first at an East River pier and later a Hudson River pier. The ship did not get underway but students operated ship's equipment and machinery.  Thousands of students went to school on the SS JOHN W. BROWN and many remain active volunteer crew members to this day.

Things to do and see while you visit

We will be open from Saturday the 10th to Saturday the 17th.  We are open from 10am each day and the last visitors to board will be at 4pm (to allow for time for them to see the ship).  Both Saturdays are going to be very special, as they will be LIVE STEAM days.   This means that the engine will be operating while we are there at the pier, so that visitors can see the plant in motion while visiting the engine room. We also have multiple events planned for the time that we are down there, from booked meetings and tours to cocktail events in the evening.  It is still not too late for organizations to book time on the ship (email the ship or call for more information). On Sunday the 18th we will not be open to the public, as that is our scheduled Living History Cruise which will take passengers down the Hudson River, past the Statue of Liberty to Sandy Hook (there may be modifications to this route based on many many factors).  Tickets for this epic cruise are still available by clicking the link (above, under Sunday September 18 'to order tickets online click here).  Parking for the cruise and other scheduled and booked events on the ship can be at Pier 42 at the Imperial Parking lot, Pier 42 East River Bikeway New York, NY 10002.  Check out this link. Pier 42 comes up on the left side, plug in your dates and times when you plan on visiting, and you can preorder parking.

Walk the Decks of this Historic Ship!
The S.S. JOHN W. BROWN, one of the last operating survivors from the great fleet of over 2,700 Liberty Ships and the last operational troopship of World War II.  We will entertain visitors with the schedule listed above. The ship will be berthed at the Pier 36, 299 South Street. Tour the engine room, crew quarters, bridge, messrooms, troop berthing, museum spaces and much more. View the magnificent 140 -ton triple- expansion steam engine, and stand on the bridge from that historic time. So much to see on board!

Take A Living History Cruise!
On Sunday, September 18th the SS JOHN W. BROWN offers a “Living History Cruise.” The 6 hour day cruise features: lunch, music of the 40’s, military and historical reenactors, flybys by World War II aircraft (conditions permitting). See the 140-ton steam engine in operation, and much more! The JOHN W. BROWN is a National Historic Ship and is fully restored and maintained as close as possible to her World War II configuration and lacks modern conveniences. Visitors must be able to walk up the gangway.

The SS JOHN W. BROWN is manned by an all volunteer crew. We keep her running with dedication and donations. If you would like to be a part of making this trip happen you can donate here

HOW LONG IS THE CRUISE?

This is our general info and the listed times may be altered depending on new details that come up.  This does give you a general idea of how cruises usually work.

Passengers can arrive as early as 7:00 a.m with boarding starting at 8:00 a.m. All passengers must be on board by 9:15 a.m. to allow time for the crew to ready the ship to sail promptly at 10:00 a.m. The ship returns at about 4:00 p.m. and passengers begin debarking by about 4:30 p.m.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

That depends in part on the weather. If it's cool, bring a jacket or sweater. If it's warm, bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. If rain is forecast, dress accordingly; inclement weather won't stop us from sailing, except in extreme conditions. Although we do have chairs available, you may also want to bring your own folding chair. Don't forget your binoculars, camera and any personal medications. And your tickets!

WHAT DO I WEAR? WHAT SHOULDN'T I WEAR?

World War II military uniforms and other period clothing from the World War II era are encouraged!

Dress based on the weather forecast for the day. Casual, comfortable clothing and flat, closed-toe shoes are a good idea. A hat and sunscreen are a must on hot days.

For your safety, heels, clogs, flip-flops, sandals or any open-toed shoes are not permitted.

WHAT FOOD IS AVAILABLE?

All food is included in the ticket price.  Lunch includes a variety of sandwiches, salads, beverages (coffee, tea, sodas & bottled water) and dessert.

Alcoholic beverages are not available nor are you permitted to bring alcoholic beverages aboard the ship.

DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN'S RATES?

No, all ticket prices are the same. We can't promise romance but mom and dad will have a much better time if they don't have to be concerned about the little ones.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

For cancellation for any reason 30 or more days prior to the cruise, there will be a $25 charge per ticket. There are no refunds for cancellations less than 30 days before the cruise.
